Cruising Log - The Whitsunday Islands (1st - 22nd September 2006)Friday 1st September 2006 (Whitsundays)My how time flies!!! We had Glenda & Warren over for lunch. In the evening we went to the Shingley Beach Resort where the Presentation for the weeks sailing was held. Saturday 2nd September 2006 (Whitsundays)This morning we went to the local markets at Airlie Beach with Mike & Lyndall from "Montage". Here we met up with Warren & Glenda and went with them to Centro for grocery shopping and back with them for afternoon drinks on "Catamaran Imagine". In the evening Mike & Lyndall came over to our cat for cards and drinks. Sunday 3rd September 2006 (Whitsundays)We spent a lazy day updating photos on the computer, etc. During the afternoon Mike & Lyndall came over for nibblies, a BBQ, we discussed their return trip south tomorrow, and then we all watched Shrek 2 on DVD. Monday 4th September 2006 (Whitsundays)"Montage" left this morning for their return trip south. I sorted old e-mails and started preparing all our photos from Bundaberg to here – over 650 of them!!! Tuesday 5th September 2006 (Whitsundays)This afternoon Cliff & Charman from "Sara" came over for coffee and a talk. We originally met them in Bundaberg. They had sailed out from the UK. Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th September 2006 (Whitsundays)Wednesday we moved into the Abel Point Marina where the boat would stay until Sunday. Thursday to Saturday we flew to Brisbane for business. We caught a bus to Proserpine airport for $15pp. The airport has a flight each day from both Jetstar & VirginBlue. The flight back was great. With little cloud I was able to see all the places we had visited on our cruise. Sunday 10th September 2006 (Whitsundays)After a quick shop, we moved out from the Marina and anchored off for the night. Monday 11th (to Friday 15th) September 2006 (Whitsundays)
We motor-sailed with the jib in about 10 knots of SE wind for Woodwark Bay that is about 7M north of Airlie. It is a nice protected bay and there were plenty of boats anchored here. Most were cruisers, not charterers who prefer the more common cruising grounds of Hook Is, Whitsunday Is and Hamilton Is. On Tuesday we met up with Warren & Glenda’s friends from Melbourne, Greg & Pauline on their yacht "Mr Bojangles".
I put out a crab pot with a chicken carcass. When I retrieved it there was a gaping hole in the end where a big crab must have escaped. On Thursday we were joined by Warren & Glenda and their guest (and Melbourne neighbour), Erin. They departed Friday for South Mole. I also took the time to work on our website for updating as soon as we could get service. Liz started work on putting captions to our 650 photos we have taken since Bundaberg. Saturday 16th (to Wednesday 20th) September 2006 (Whitsundays)Our BEP digital gauge is in for repair. It displays fuel tanks, black tanks and fresh water. We can judge the fuel tanks by engine hours and we carry spare diesel in containers anyway. This morning there was that sound when I used the fresh water tap that said water low! So off to Abel Point to get diesel, water and gas. You need to book a time for refuelling so we did that. Again we anchored off the marina wall. We are getting used to this little anchorage. On Monday we heard from our friends, Bill & Toni on "Beva". They were on their way into the marina as Bill had fallen and hurt his back. We put the dinghy in and helped them into their narrow berth. Later in the day Warren & Glenda returned to the marina to drop off Erin. Tuesday was shopping day and we went to Centro for groceries with Warren. Wednesday morning Warren & I cycled to the Chandlery at the Mitre 10 store for some bits. We then set sail at mid-day in the company of our friends, Warren & Glenda on "Catamaran Imagine". Our ultimate destination was Cairns, although today we would only sail to Double Bay (see next log). |
